Kundali Milan: Marriage Matching Explained

Kundali Milan, also called Guna Milan, compares the birth charts of two people before marriage. It is one of the most common reasons families ask for a kundali.

The 36 points of Ashtakoot

The common method, Ashtakoot, scores eight factors based mainly on the Moon in each chart. The maximum is 36 points.

A total of 18 or more is commonly treated as acceptable, but a score alone is not a full answer.

What a full reading looks at

Beyond the score, an astrologer studies the 7th house of partnership in both charts, the position of Venus and Jupiter, the running planetary periods (dashas) of each person, and whether Mangal dosh is present.

What is Mangal (Manglik) dosh?

Mangal dosh is said to arise when Mars sits in certain houses of the chart, most often counted as the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. Traditions differ on the details, and many astrologers also look at balancing factors in the other chart.

Common questions

What is a good Guna Milan score?

Many people treat 18 or more out of 36 as acceptable, and higher scores as better. A full reading also considers the planets and periods, not the score alone.

Can matching be done without the exact birth time?

It can be attempted, but the Moon position and the houses may be less reliable. Exact times for both people give the most dependable result.

Does a low score mean a marriage will fail?

No. Astrology offers guidance, not a verdict. A low score is a reason to look more closely, not to decide for you.
