What is Mangal dosh?

Mangal dosh is said to arise when Mars (Mangal) sits in certain houses of the birth chart. The houses most often counted are the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th from the Lagna (ascendant). Some traditions add the 2nd house.

Many astrologers also check the position of Mars from the Moon and from Venus, not only from the Lagna, before saying a chart is Manglik.

Why it is checked before marriage

Mars is linked with energy, drive and conflict. When it falls in houses connected with home, partnership and married life, tradition treats it as a point to examine carefully before marriage. Traditions differ on how much weight to give it.

Being Manglik is common

Because five or six of the twelve houses are counted, a large share of all charts show Mangal dosh by the simple rule. That is why a careful reading never stops at the rule alone, and looks at the whole chart.

What is said to balance it

Traditional texts list several conditions that are said to cancel or reduce Mangal dosh. Common examples include:

Which conditions apply, and how strongly, is judged from the full chart.

Common questions

Am I Manglik if Mars is in my 7th house?

Mars in the 7th house from the Lagna is one of the standard placements for Mangal dosh. Whether it is strong or balanced depends on the sign, the aspects and the rest of the chart.

Does Mangal dosh reduce with age?

Some traditions say its effect softens after a certain age, often given as 28. Traditions differ, so we judge it from your own chart rather than from age alone.

Can a Manglik person marry a non-Manglik person?

Yes, many do. Matching looks at both charts as a whole, including the factors that balance Mangal dosh, not at one rule alone.
