Muhurat: Choosing an Auspicious Date and Time
A muhurat is an auspicious date and time chosen for an important beginning. It is chosen from the panchang and checked against your own birth chart.

Events people choose a muhurat for
- Marriage and engagement
- Griha pravesh (entering a new home) and starting construction
- Opening a shop or starting a business
- Buying a vehicle or property
- Naming ceremony and other family events
- Starting a journey, a course of study or a new job
The five limbs of the panchang
Every day of the Hindu calendar is described by five elements, the panchang:
- Tithi: the lunar day
- Vara: the weekday
- Nakshatra: the lunar mansion the Moon is in
- Yoga: a combination of the Sun’s and Moon’s positions
- Karana: half of a tithi
A good muhurat has these elements in favourable combination for the kind of event planned.
Times commonly avoided
Many traditions avoid new beginnings during Rahu Kaal, on Amavasya (the new Moon), during eclipses, and in certain periods of the year for particular events. The exact rules depend on the event and on regional custom.
Matched to your own chart
A general muhurat from a calendar is the same for everyone. A personal muhurat also checks the chosen time against your birth chart, for example the strength of your Moon sign and birth nakshatra on that day, and the Lagna rising at the chosen time.

Common questions
How far ahead should I ask for a muhurat?
As early as you can. A wider range of dates gives more good options, especially for marriage, when suitable dates are in high demand.
Can you choose a time on a date I have already fixed?
Yes. If the date is fixed, we look for the most suitable time window on that day.
What if no perfect date is available in my range?
We suggest the best available date and time within your range and explain its strengths, so you can decide.
